For Schubert, who had always been an avid reader, books had seemed like food and drink. Even among friends, he preferred a serious conversation, free from intellectual ‘nit-picking,’ to the usual empty gossip. And now this stimulation, too, was gone and its absence made him feel his isolation even more. Mayrhofer’s Abendstern (D. 806) summed up his perfectly his withdrawal and isolation: “Why are you so lonely and so gentle up there in the sky, my beautiful star?
